What is a squib load?

A squib load is a term used in firearms to describe a cartridge that fails to produce enough force to effectively propel the bullet out of the barrel. This can happen due to a variety of reasons, such as a weak powder charge, defective ammunition, or a blocked barrel.

Firing a squib load can be dangerous as the bullet may become lodged in the barrel, causing a blockage. If the shooter fails to recognize that the round did not fully fire and loads another round behind it, it can result in a catastrophic failure of the firearm, known as a barrel obstruction.

To prevent squib loads, shooters should always be aware of the sound and recoil of each shot fired and immediately stop shooting if they notice anything unusual. It is also important to inspect the barrel for blockages before firing additional rounds.
